Recreation

Archery

Led by: National Ability Center

Ambitious archers will have the opportunity to learn about both recurve and compound bows as they develop proper shooting form, aligning and shooting techniques. This activity is for all ages and abilities.

 

Breaking Barriers Through Boxing

Led by: B-Bold

Boxing is a great way to have fun, get in shape and build strength. You will be lead through boxing and self-defense exercises that will have you knocking down barriers in no time. Available for all ages and ability levels. Wear comfortable athletic clothing.

 

Climbing Wall Experience

Led by: Mark Wellman & No Limits

Learn about climbing equipment and basic climbing techniques as you reach for success on this on-site climbing wall that will overlook the No Barriers Summit grounds. Certified instructors from No Limits with extensive adaptive climbing experience will be on hand to facilitate participants while providing them the necessary instruction and equipment to make the climb an inspiring success. Wear comfortable athletic clothing.

 

Goalball

Led by: City of Sacramento – Youth, Parks, & Community Dept

Join the fun of this fantastic team game that was on the ground floor of inclusion and adaptive recreation. With a unique history going back to WWII, goalball is a wonderful combination of fun and skill. Blindfolded players work as a team to block the opposing team from rolling a basketball size ball (with bells inside) from entering their goal. Once they are able to stop the ball and control it, they become the offensive team. Everyone is welcome to this fun, social and unique game.

 

Intro to Adaptive Cycling and Equipment

Led by: City of Reno, BORP, Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra, and Reno-Sparks AMBUCS

Designed as an introductory cycling experience. Participants will be introduced to the wide variety of adaptive cycling equipment options; upright, recumbent, pedal powered and hand powered cycles. In addition to learning about the basic equipment, participants will be taught the skills to use this equipment to ride in a controlled environment. Participants will be appropriately challenged given the allotted time to experience the potential that cycling can provide in their daily lives as a means of expanding lifestyle fitness activities. We envision that total beginners will stay within a confined space such as a parking lot. This is an excellent opportunity to try several new types of cycles.

 

Kayaking on Stunning Lake Tahoe

Led by: Environmental Travel Companions

Experience beautiful Lake Tahoe in a kayak. Whether you paddle in a triple or double kayak, you will experience the freedom and joy of exploration on this world-class freshwater lake with stunning views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. ETC’s instructor team will work with you individually to make the necessary adaptations so you are comfortable paddling.

 

Mountain Biking

Led by: City of Reno, Bay Area Outreach Program (BORP) and Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra

Designed as an introductory mountain biking experience. Participants will be introduced to the wide variety of adaptive mountain bike equipment options; recumbent, pedal powered and hand powered cycles. In addition to learning about the basic equipment, participants will be taught the skills to use this equipment to ride in a controlled environment. No Barriers Life Elements Amazing Race

Led by: CBST

Join forces with team members to explore Squaw Creek in search of challenges modeled after our No Barriers Life Elements. These initiatives will encompass a broad range of exercises ranging from mental, physical, creative and even technological components that requires a full team effort for success! Participants can choose their level of challenge and find a role to accomplish each tasks that works for them. In the end, it’s the collaborative team effort that leads to victory! Your squad will band together in efforts of scoring the most points or completing each task in the least amount of time. You may either come with teammates in tow, or arrive on your own and we’ll place you on a team. This event is an ideal place to build new friendships, and find inspiration for future No Barriers journeys! The No Barriers Amazing Race is brought together by CBST Adventures.

 

Road Cycling Ride

Led by: City of Reno, Bay Area Outreach Program (BORP) and Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra

The road ride is an opportunity for individuals that have participated in cycling before and would like the opportunity to advance their experience by pedaling for a longer day along the local bike trail network. Upon being equipped with the appropriate equipment or getting set up in their personal equipment, participants will set out for a ride to explore the Squaw Valley/Tahoe City area, engage in conversation with others and experience a challenging physical opportunity. Longer days of cycling help participants begin to recognize the potential of using cycle tours and rides as a method of personal challenge, physical fitness and lifelong activity.

 

Swimming

Led by: AquAbility

Jump in and join us to discover the many benefits of therapeutic aquatics and swimming. If you are already a swimmer, you will learn ways to improve your efficiency and stroke technique. If you have little experience, come work with AquAbility staff and discover a new healthy activity. Bring a swimsuit and towel; all other equipment will be provided. This clinic is for all ages and abilities.

 

Trail Walk

Led by: Move Mountains

Explore the beautiful Tahoe area with an outdoor walk on a resort-based, accessible trail. Accompanied by local, experienced facilitators from Move Mountains, you will find the right balance between challenge and leisure as you experience the outdoors and local beauty of the area along side your fellow Summit adventurers.

 

Warriors Team Building Adventure

Experience the No Barriers Life in camaraderie with fellow veterans as you experience challenging activities in the high Sierras surrounding Lake Tahoe. Teams link up for breakfast before heading to the hills to push themselves to new heights. Track events are designed to push the team and include rock climbing, hiking towards a local peak, and moving through mountainous terrain.

 

Whitewater Rafting on the Truckee River

Led by: Environmental Travel Companions

Whitewater rafting for all abilities! This adventure with ETC takes you down a beautiful stretch of the Truckee River. You will raft on class II rapids and experience the joy, freedom and camaraderie of river rafting on a paddle raft team. ETC will provide life jackets, wetsuit and paddle jacket. A full equipment list will be provided after registration.

 

Workout For Every Body

Led by: Whitney Way Thore

Whitney believes that fitness is for EVERY body and her No BS Active workouts are designed to benefit beginners and athletes and everyone in between. Designed with plenty of modifications in mind, these workouts can be done anywhere and with no equipment!

Broadway Insider Experience

Led by: ThisAbility

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to perform on Broadway? Join NYC’s own ThisAbility as they lead you through the audition process, give you insider secrets and share stories from the stage. You will learn a part from a Broadway show and experience the ‘audition’ process, just like the Broadway stars do! The Broadway Insider Experience culminates with an inside scoop of the happenings in castings, rehearsal and the Broadway Stage. Our Broadway guest artists will leave you with stories from the business you will never forget!

 

Dancing for All: No BS

Led by: Whitney Way Thore

Do you have a body? Then this class is for you! Join Whitney Way Thore, star of TLC’s My Big Fat Fabulous Life, as she leads you and your fellow participants through an upbeat dance class for ANY-body! Whitney founded No Body Shame in 2014, a global movement designed to help people of every variety live their lives fully, passionately and free of shame. Dance without shame, work through your personal summits and enjoy everything that your body can accomplish.

 

Digital Photography

Led by: Lauren Kallen

Take your photography hobby and skills to the next level with this digital photography workshop led by professional photographer, Lauren Kallen. This workshop will guide you through steps to improve both your creative and technical skills with a focus on landscape and portrait photography, using the natural beauty of Lake Tahoe as our backdrop. We will focus on learning how to adjust camera settings for different environments, as well as finding creative ways to frame your image. Photographers of all skills are welcome, however, cameras are NOT provided. To get the most out of this experience, bring a digital SLR camera, and your creative eye!

 

Drumming Through the No Barriers Life Elements

Led by: Linda Emmerman- Health Rhythms Facilitator

The Health Rhythms approach is to extend the benefits of group drumming as a form of Recreational Music Making. This encompasses enjoyable, accessible and fulfilling group music based activities that unite people of all ages regardless of their challenges, backgrounds, ethnicity, ability or prior experience. Group drumming enables the energy, strength and conviction needed for taking an active and meaningful role in one’s healing process amidst extraordinary challenges. Each fun and energizing session will be an opportunity for all to further develop their understanding of what it means to live a No Barriers Life through drumming rhythms based on the Life Elements.

 

Everyone Has A Story

Led by: ThisAbility

This empowering workshop begins by learning who you are, and what story holds the most truth and power for you.  In this workshop participants will learn how to overcome their fears and brainstorm new ways to structure their stories to help paint a clear picture through the guidance of 2019 No Barriers Summit performer, Jamie Petrone. Everyone has a story to tell, and this workshop provides a space where each participant’s truth is celebrated.

 

Feel the Music with Mandy Harvey

Led by: Mandy Harvey

Learn to feel the music with Mandy Harvey, America’s Got Talent finalist, award winning singer, songwriter, and motivational speaker to experience music in a new way. You will use Mandy’s innovative method of incorporating vibration to feel the music and learn to rely on all senses to create harmony.

 

Just Improvise

Led by: Deadbeats & Hustlers Improv Troupe

The thought of participating in Improvisational Comedy might make you slightly nervous. This is is exactly why you should reach outside your comfort zone with New York City’s Deadbeats & Hustlers. Dust off your quick wit and have these masterful instructors lead you through various exercises and games that will introduce you to this exciting art form and build class community. All infused with a No Barriers spirit!

 

Songwriting with Magic Giant

Led by: Magic Giant

Learn about the process that the members of MAGIC GIANT takes when creating their catchy, thought provoking and upbeat songs. Join the members of MAGIC GIANT as they lead you through a songwriting workshop that will help inspire you, provoke you, and lead you to discovering more about yourself through music and the art of songwriting.

 

The Pocket Photographer: An Introduction to Phone Photography

Led by: Lauren Kallen

If you ever doubted yourself as a photographer, think again! With phone cameras increasingly becoming our main tool for capturing our daily memories, professional photographer Lauren Kallen will lead you through a hands-on session that will improve your overall understanding for capturing moments on the go, while getting the most out of your phone camera by using various photo editing apps. This session will help you learn how to capture, edit and share high quality creative images through mobile phone photography. All you need is your smartphone and a sense of artistic adventure!

Change Your Mindset, Find Your Purpose

Natasha Nurse, founder of Dressing Room 8, life coach, radio and podcast host, and writer will lead you through this workshop that will teach you how to change your mindset, and to identify and restructure barriers in your life into opportunity to discover your true purpose.

 

Introduction to Falconry

Led by: West Coast Falconry

Lead by a master falconer, this activity will teach you about the ancient sport of falconry, raptor conservation and natural history. Then we’ll glove up to learn how to call and catch a trained hawk on the glove. Explore the world of Birds of Prey as you are introduced to multiple birds of prey in an intimate fashion.

 

Meditation for Awakening Passion, Power and Purpose

Led by: Zen Warrior Training

Many people struggle with the concept and practice of meditation. Often, people think they should be doing it, but don’t understand why or how. The fact is, meditation is poorly understood in our modern culture. It is far more than just a tool to relax and get out of your head. It is arguably the most effective way of overcoming the burdens of life and living from a deeply connected place of passion, power and purpose.

 

The Power of Conscious Breathing

No Barriers University: Creative Living Through Innovation

A must attend! Innovation is the application of creating a better solution to a problem or need. Innovation relies on creativity, inspiration, and imagination. This session will not only showcase innovators who have created products or services that are meant to better the world but will also give you practical ways to incorporate innovation into your life. Current session leaders include Mindy Scheier, Founder and President of Runway of Dreams Foundation and collaborator of the adaptable clothing line with Tommy Hilfiger, and Scott Kim, CEO of NEOFECT USA who created the Rapael Smart Glove – a high-tech rehab device that measures movement and motions and connects to the “RAPAEL” app where users play games to assist in their rehabilitation.

 

Turning Fear into Power: Model Mugging Self Defense

The workshop provides the foundation to achieve peace of mind through personal safety so you can focus on what is important to achieve your fullest potential. Begin to build confidence and communicate more assertively. Developed through 50 years of research and synthesized experience, the workshop combines personal discovery with physical drills and scenarios that expand your mind and body with information that is not taught anywhere else.

2019 No Barriers Summit Tahoe Opening Ceremony

Join your fellow No Barriers participants at the No Barriers Summit Opening Ceremony! The Opening Ceremony will give you insight into what you’ll experience throughout the weekend, as well as start your journey with inspirational speakers and performers. This event will be filled with emotion, excitement, motivation and even a little dancing! This is an event that you don’t want to miss!

 

Movies in the Mountains

Screen two documentaries in the fresh mountain air on Friday, June 14. Eduardo Garcia and Erik Weihenmayer will join No Barriers for the screening of their documentaries and a Q&A with the film’s stars. Garcia’s film, Charged, is a feature length documentary film about Eduardo’s recovery and survival after being shocked by 2400 volts of electricity. The Weight of Water, from filmmaker Michael Brown, follows adaptive adventurer Erik Weihenmayer on a whitewater kayaking trip through the Grand Canyon’s Lava Falls.

 

No Barriers LIVE

No Barriers LIVE is a culmination of the weekend’s activities and will be filled with exhilarating performances by world-renowned speakers and performers! The evening will include thought provoking inspiration, passion for life and exhilarating musical performances. Conclude your No Barriers experience with reflection on your new experiences with your new friends at this energetic performance!
