Jose “Joey” Martinez III was raised in a military family. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 2003 and graduated from its Amphibious Reconnaissance School shortly thereafter. In 2006, while conducting counter-terrorist operations in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, Martinez was injured by an improvised explosive device. This resulted in a traumatic brain injury and left him legally blind.
Martinez has refused to let his injuries stop him. He learned how to snowboard, and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in wildlife ecology. The daily struggles accompanying severe vision loss and a TBI have brought difficulties, but Martinez is determined to push himself to live his best life. He looks forward to supporting fellow veterans during and after the expedition as they, as a team, learn to navigate and overcome personal barriers.
