William Gwaltney enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1995 and deployed multiple times, including to Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, Japan and Iraq. He retired from active duty in 2015.
Since retirement, Gwaltney enjoys outdoor activities, such as hiking, mountain biking and off-roading in a Jeep. He’s also completed the New Mexico state certification training to become a volunteer Search and Rescue team member and looks forward to giving back in a new way.
Gwaltney hopes to reconnect with fellow service members during the expedition. As a veteran with a disability, he’s found it difficult to connect with his local community. He looks forward to overcoming his mental blocks and motivating himself to get out and become more involved in his town.
