Dates: June 19 – 26, 2020*

Day 1: Welcome to Thailand!

Arrive into Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) and meet your Program Leaders who will be with you for the duration of the program. Jump on the bus and begin the trek out to this rural corner of northern Thailand to the community, passing through beautiful landscapes along the way. Have a hot meal (more curries, please!) and join the group for an orientation discussion about the week ahead, expectations for your adventure, and an introduction to the local culture.

  • Overnight: Hotel, Mae Sariang
Day 2: Learn about Thai and Karen Culture

It wouldn’t be the best family holiday in Thailand without the chance to immerse yourself in Karen and Thai culture. Visit a nearby village to learn about traditional weaving and the legendary art of Muay Thai, Thai kickboxing and self-defense, with a training session in the nearby open-air gym. In the afternoon, learn the basics of lesson planning as you prepare for education enrichment service later in the week. Have dinner with your group and relax for the evening, reflecting on the day and your first cultural activities in northern Thailand.

  • Overnight: Hotel, Mae Sariang
Day 3: Community Service in the Mountains

Head into the mountains to one of our partner villages to take part in our rural outreach and development program. The specific projects will depend on the time of year and needs of the village. Past projects have included building a library, building a canteen, and adding a floor to the school building. Be prepared to get your hands dirty working in collaboration with local villagers. Join your group for a post-service debrief in the evening, discussing what you experienced and learned through hands-on work in the community.

  • Overnight: Hotel, Mae Sariang
Day 4: Service and Village Life

After a hearty breakfast, continue working on your service project. Working side by side with staff and locals, accomplish your construction goals for the day and enjoy getting to know the community members. After wrapping up, take time in the afternoon to play soccer with the locals, practice your new Thai vocabulary with villagers, or find a quiet place to journal. Head back to your hotel in Mae Sariang for your last night in the mountains.

  • Overnight: Hotel, Mae Sariang
Day 5: Chiang Mai and City Life

After breakfast, say your goodbyes to the village community members you have met and make your way back down the mountain into the valley to the city of Chiang Mai. Stop at the hotel to shower and leave your bags before heading out to the night market for souvenir shopping and dinner with your group, experiencing a whole different facet of northern Thailand.

  • Overnight: Hotel, Chiang Mai
Day 6: Northern Thailand Reforestation

After adjusting to life in Chiang Mai, we’ll start learning about some of the issues that conservationists face in this biodiversity hotspot. Deforestation is one of the most acute pressures on elephants and other endangered species face. To delve deeper, you will spend the day with Chiang Mai University’s Forest Restoration Research Unit. Head up Chiang Mai’s famous Doi Suthep mountain and learn about the different forest types and ongoing efforts to protect and restore the fragile ecosystems. Learn how to identify and propagate different seeds and spend some time working in the onsite nursery. This evening, you will have a mid-trip discussion with your program leaders.

  • Overnight: Hotel, Chiang Mai
Day 7: Chiang Mai
