Storytelling and Social Media Specialist

The Storytelling and Social Media Specialist will play an integral role in the No Barriers’ Marketing team’s efforts to deepen engagement with our constituents. This person is responsible for writing the stories of the greater No Barriers’ community, and also for managing all our social media channels. This person will sit within the Marketing team, but also work closely with all staff to ensure that we are capturing and leveraging the amazing stories of our community to their utmost impact. The ideal candidate will have a talent for and love of writing, have an aptitude and experience creating content for and managing social media channels, have a metrics-based approach to analyzing success, and be self-directed with a great attitude.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Storytelling / Writing —

  • Understand our community members and target markets
  • Identify and elicit stories of interest from No Barriers staff, board, and greater community
  • Help create and foster a storytelling culture at No Barriers by leading a to-be-formed Storytelling Committee and meeting with individuals to help bring their story ideas to completion
  • Work with the Marketing Director to increase opportunities to expand engagement with existing community to learn about their stories of impact and growth
  • Write quality articles for our blog on a frequent, consistent basis
  • Work with the Senior Content Producer to create and manage a content calendar for the organization
  • Be able to adjust storytelling tone and writing style to adapt to different writing goals (e.g. call-to-action, fundraising, transformation story of impacts, etc.)
  • Track and manage impacts of the blog and other articles through metrics-based measurements
  • Work with other departments to help with other writing needs (e.g. fundraising appeal letters, website and email copy, etc)
  • Lead the development and execution of new storytelling initiatives that could help us meet greater No Barriers organizational goals

Social Media —

  • Manage all content and engagement on No Barriers’ primary social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn)
  • Work with Marketing team on ideas to grow No Barriers’ overall engaged community through our social media channels
  • Leverage our social media to drive key conversions around recruitment to our programs, registrations for our events and online courses, and donations during fundraising campaigns
  • Manage & implement an editorial calendar for all NB social media channels
  • Work with our Graphics Specialist to share creative, compelling, fun, funny, inspirational, and altogether awesome content on our channels
  • Work with our Sales and Outreach Manager to drive interested parties to our engagement & participation pipelines
  • Leverage our social media ads budget to its most effective uses
  • Research best practices and implement social media fundraising campaigns from inception to reporting results
  • Pull engagement reports from social media posts for reporting metrics to sponsors
  • Participate in program-specific marketing plans that help drive awareness to potential participants, share experiences of current participants, and demonstrate impacts on alumni participants to our community and program funders
  • Work with No Barriers Program departments to distribute social media engagement opportunities in a way that multiplies our content-creation, provides subject-level expertise, and additional authentic voices from No Barriers
  • Engage with our social media community with in an authentic, kind, helpful manner

No Barriers Program Knowledge —

  • Responsible for knowing all functional aspects of all NB products and services in order to develop strategies that help drive program participation and be able to communicate effectively with potential participants
  • Maintain an understanding of industry trends, current events, anything that may impact the business by reading professional blogs/publications, and participating in professional organizations
  • Demonstrate superb communication skills to ensure other teams are fully up to speed on deliverable timeline expectations
  • Communicate workload focus to Marketing Director on a regular basis to ensure alignment on prioritization

Job Qualifications:

Knowledge, skills, and ability —

  • Proven ability and experience in writing and social media management
  • Understanding of management within a non-profit organization
  • Exceptional interpersonal, presentation, and verbal/written communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once with focus and efficiency
  • Proven strategic thinker with ability to balance short term needs with long term planning and growth over time
  • Exceptional organizational skills and keen attention to detail
  • Excellent collaboration skills, positive attitude and professionalism
  • Ability to track spending against budgets
  • High-level skills in Google/Microsoft products (Docs/Word, Sheets/Excel, Slides/PowerPoint)
  • Experience working with complex CRMs (SalesForce, HubSpot) or equivalent
  • Experience working with any of our target audiences (Schools, Educators, Youth, Veterans, Corporations, Non-Profits)  (desired, not required)

Education or formal training — Bachelor’s degree (required)

  • In a field related to communications, marketing, business (desired, not required)

Work Environment —

  • This is an office job based out of the Fort Collins home office requiring use of a computer.
