Meet Emily Bastos, Program Director

Emily Bastos

It takes tremendous effort and coordination to build and execute No Barriers programming.

From basecamp experiences to backcountry expeditions, No Barriers Program Director Emily Bastos has worked tirelessly with her teams to carefully create a safe, comfortable and collaborative environment for individuals affected by disabilities to break past the obstacles in their lives. We are extremely fortunate to have her at the helm and recently, we sat down to ask her about the challenges and rewards of her job, and more.

How long have you worked with No Barriers?

I’m entering my third year of programming with No Barriers!

What drew you to the organization?

For as long as I can remember I wanted to help create opportunities for people to connect with the outdoors. Growing up recreating in the Florida Everglades with my family, I felt a deep sense of belonging and a desire to support others in finding a similar connection. Having a community of people that support you in achieving your goals is pretty special, and that’s behind a lot of what drew me to No Barriers.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your role?

The best part of my job is getting people outside and into experiences that challenge them in new ways. Seeing someone take on something they didn’t think they could do, that’s unmatched.

What is the most challenging?

The hardest part is the demand. We have a lot of people who want to engage with No Barriers and experience the value of the Life Elements, but only so many resources to go around. It’s a constant balance.

What impact do you hope No Barriers has on participants?

I believe our organization has the ability to spark real, lasting change. People come back so inspired to make a difference in how they live their lives and when we get folks saying “I made this change and I’m so much better because of it” it’s the best kind of affirmation.

Why does No Barriers have essential eligibility criteria to participate in programs?

We are all about pushing boundaries, but in a way that’s empowering, not overwhelming. Our experiential learning model helps participants build agency: confidence, voice, and ownership over their decisions- especially when things get tough or unfamiliar.

How do you personally strive to live a No Barriers Life?

I constantly question the limits I’ve placed on myself. How many of these are rooted in reality, and how many are based on fear or the inability to identify the next steps that make them possible?

What about professionally?

When I started at No Barriers, the pledge on my flag was to “Find Joy and Trust the Process.” My career has had some unexpected twists, but joy, patience, and purpose remain the trail markers that keep me moving forward.

What things can people reading this do to live a No Barriers Life?

I would say think of one thing that intimidates you a little- whether it’s a call to a family member you’ve struggled to connect with recently or that thing you’ve wanted to sign up for though aren’t sure you’re ready for. Progress isn’t linear, but it starts with a single step and a vision, no matter how small.

Where do you want No Barriers to be in 5, 10, 20 years?

More than anything, I hope we’re still building community, still helping people dream bigger, and still reminding everyone that they can do the thing that once felt just out of reach.

If you would like to help more people affected by disabilities access our life-changing programs and events, please donate to No Barriers today. Every amount makes an impact.

Thank you for being an essential member of the No Barriers Community!
